Message from Zahra:

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and that your quarter is going well!  We would like to invite you to our Civic & Community Engagement meeting on Friday November 9 from 1:30-3:30 in Student Services 1010 A,B.  At the meeting, we will have a chance to network, we will discuss current civic and community engagement projects, and lunch will be served!

We are in the process of reorganizing the Civic & Community Engagement Committee into an Advisory Council format with members who  play an active role in the development of specific community engagement projects.  With that in mind, I’ve created a brief survey to find out your thoughts about our reorganization.  Whether you are a current committee member or not, please take the time to complete the survey, and feel free to send the link to anyone who may be interested in weighing in.  You can find it at: http://eee.uci.edu/survey/CCESurvey

I look forward to seeing you on November 9!  Please RSVP to Zahra Ahmed at ahmedz@uci.edu

I thought the meeting was very informative and I am happy that I attended it. It gave me insight about all the planning that goes into the minor behind the scenes. I was able to listen to all the different ideas the group had to offer and had the opportunity to become more aware of the various programs and events that they are aiming to collaborate with. One of the events that I see as a great collaboration opportunity is the Engage UCI event. I think it would be great to get UCI involved more in the civic and community engagement aspect of their college education because there are so many clubs and organizations on campus that deal with community engagement. Another possibility that I think would be a great idea is to collaborate with The Center for Living Peace. After having volunteered at the center, I can see so many positive opportunities that could result from collaboration with UCI’s minor in civic and community engagement. The center is right on campus and I think it would be wonderful if the center could provide specific programs for UCI students. This would benefit the minor as well as expanding the center’s role that they hold in the community. Overall, I am happy with my participation at the meeting because it helped me to become more aware of plans that staff have for the minor and allows me to think more about the other possible opportunities that can help the civic and community engagement minor to grow and expand.

Thanks! I thought the meeting was very engaging and productive because the director explained more about different ways we can all get involved in changing our communities. I like how this minor does not have a predetermined path but only has 2 required classes and then you are free to get involved in something that you really would like to change through the internship. I appreciate how they stress student input and places everybody on the same level instead of placing a hierarchy of people based on their title. Also, I even received an email from the director’s intern to be interviewed so that tells me that they really do value students as a whole. The meeting was really helpful and I appreciate how they invited students to the meeting as well as faculty because that is trying to bring everybody together in order to get things working and not excluding based off of lack of experience or status.

I was admired the concept of civic and community engagement. It’s beneficial for both researcher and community to connect each other. Researchers can get information from community and community also gets benefit from research. The idea that UCI as a research university should be engage research which is beneficial for community is reasonable. I feel sometime what I learn in university is far from the reality of the world. Thus, the project is also beneficial for students who engage in research projects because they can learn how to use their knowledge and skills in real life through these researches. But the projects don’t go so well. One of the reasons is that researchers cannot gain benefits so much from the projects. Now, if they want to contribute community, they can do so like volunteers. Local NGO can promote their opinions more if they have concrete proof from research. For researchers, the most important things is to publish in academic. They don’t have to contribute community. All in all, civic and community engagement itself relies on volunteer sprit of people at first. If it goes well, everyone can get benefit at certain level. However, before benefit become clear, it’s hard to promote. Making system helping each other is difficult and takes time.
